Bruce Lee once said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”

The idea is simple—mastery comes from focus. That’s exactly why Indochino stands out to me in the tailored menswear arena. While other brands spread themselves thin across casualwear, accessories, and everything in between, Indochino keeps its attention squarely on tailored clothing.

So if a guy wanted to lay the foundation for a well-rounded wardrobe, I wouldn’t blame him for starting here.

With that in mind, these are my picks for an Indochino starter pack—six pieces that bring versatility, polish, and longevity to any closet.

Harrogate Glen Check Charcoal Suit

If you’re anything like me, a 20-something professionally with an inexcusably limited suiting lineup, you’ve probably felt that going back to that same black suit feels akin to a humiliation ritual.

Under these circumstances, the next suit needs to be versatile—something that delivers year-round elegance to weddings, business meetings, or flexing your sartorial know-how to that new girl over a candlelit dinner. Might I introduce you to the Herrogate Glen Check Charcoal Suit?

Merely from a style perspective, gray fits in just about anywhere. However, instead of a flat, monochromatic appearance, this suit takes on a subtle Glen check to keep things interesting without stepping into “look at my plaid suit” territory.

If that isn’t adaptable enough, the 95% wool 5% makeup is assuredly midweight with a 265 GSM weight. Whether sported with a breathable cotton button down in the summer or a burly wool overcoat in the winter, the Harrogate Glen Check Charcoal Suit is immune to any weather-related excuses.

The gray works in any setting, while the subtle Glen check adds depth without demanding attention. Its midweight wool blend makes it wearable year-round, whether layered in winter or with a light shirt in summer—a perfect step up from my tired black suit.

Helmsley Oxford Shirt

Every guy needs an oxford shirt. Period. Building out your wardrobe without one is essentially building a mansion over marshy swampland— it’s destined to crumble.

The Helmsley Oxford Shirt maintains a traditional design with 100% cotton oxford cloth, skipping the synthetic filler fabrics that make “performance” shirts feel cheap and plasticky. Not only that, but 100% cotton isn’t bound to stink nearly as easily as synthetic fabrics. Speaking from experience, here.

Then there’s the price. At less than $110, this Oxford is a steal, especially considering most brands charge more without the complimentary tailoring that’s paramount to Indochino.

Paxton Glen Check Light Brown Bomber Jacket

Don’t get me wrong, I dig the retro aesthetic of an Alpha Industries bomber, but they adhere strictly to the silhouette of the military-issued OGs. With that being said, poofy, cropped bomber jackets have a low style cieling when looking polished is the MO. This is what the Paxton Glen Check Bomber Jacket does differently.

What I like most about this jacket is that it falls neatly within the overall design ethos of Inodchino. In place of a single-color nylon shell, the Paxton takes on a timeless plaid pattern over an equally hearty 100% wool construction.

The primary reason it wins my vote towards starter pack finalist is the slim fit. Classic bombers teeter more towards poofy than they do full-bodied. The Paxton is a second layer that I’d throw over an oxford or a shirt/sweater combo without worrying it would look oversized or two sizes too small respectively.

The piece is exactly what I want in a bomber—sleek, structured, and easy to wear. The wool fabric and plaid pattern give it a more polished feel than the usual nylon versions, and the slim fit means you can layer it over a variety of first-layer garment options without a billowing silhouette.

Harford Velvet Black Tuxedo

A tuxedo isn’t something you’ll wear every week, but when the occasion calls for one, there’s simply no substitute. And if you’re building a wardrobe with Indochino, investing in a tux from the same brand that handles your everyday suiting just makes sense.

The Harford Velvet Black Tuxedo is the kind of piece that ensures you’re prepared without scrambling for a last-minute rental that fits like a borrowed costume.

What piqued my attention is the Hartford’s velvet fabric. It leans into luxury without feeling flashy, offering a balance between classic black-tie norms and a rich, textured finish. It’s formal, but with personality—standing out just enough while keeping things timeless.

Whether it’s a wedding, charity auction, or a gala that actually enforces the dress code, nobody will question your grasp on black-tie sensibilities.

Stockport Wool Linen Suit

Every well-rounded wardrobe needs a suit that feels tailor-made for summer. Light, breathable, and effortlessly refined, the Stockport Wool Linen Sand Suit checks every box. The sandy tan shade, in particular, makes it an easy recommendation on my part for warm-weather occasions, from outdoor weddings to rooftop gatherings. A white is hard to pull off. Tan is foolproof.

Unlike a full-linen suit—which, as I’ve learned, can be a nightmare to maintain—this one strikes the right balance between structure and breathability. The 85% wool, 15% linen blend offers the best of both worlds: the airy, laid-back feel of linen with enough wool to keep it from looking like a crumpled mess by noon.

Whether you’re pairing it with a crisp white shirt and loafers for an easygoing formal look or dressing it down with a knit polo, the Stockport is precisely the kind of summer suit that embodies the carefree nature the season calls for.

Light, breathable, and structured enough to avoid the usual linen headaches, the wool blend keeps it sharp all day, while the sandy tan shade feels right at home at warm-weather events. It’s easy to style, easy to wear, and easy to keep cool in.

Hatton Twill Quilted Overcoat

If you live in a climate that experiences all four seasons, a solid overcoat is non-negotiable for draping another layer over a suit, and the Hatton Twill Black Quilted Overcoat is one I’d personally vouch for.

It’s made from breathable wool, which keeps it comfortable in milder weather, but the quilted lining adds enough insulation for when temperatures drop. That balance makes it more versatile than your typical heavy wool coat, especially if you don’t deal with brutal winters.

What really sells me on this piece are the details—canvassed lapels, bullhorn buttons, standard shoulder pads, and high-quality collar felt. I typically find these elements in coats at twice the price, but Indochino delivers them in a fully custom-fitted design for under $550.

If I were starting fresh with Indochino, these would be my picks. Each piece has a purpose—whether it’s a year-round suit, a sharp overcoat, or a tux that keeps you from last-minute rentals.

INDOCHINO Suits

If you’re looking for a suit on a budget, Indochino is well worth a look. Their customization options and respectable range of colorways, not to mention their free shipping policy, provides an excellent value proposition.
