Despite all of the doom and gloom from market speculators, everything from Pokémon cards to postal antiques have been on a bull run through 2024.

Now, the sports memorabilia sector just witnessed a seismic shift with the auction of a Babe Ruth jersey, worn during what might be baseball’s most debated moment.

The jersey, tied to Ruth’s infamous “called shot” in the 1932 World Series, sold for a mind-numbing $24.12 million at Heritage Auctions, smashing previous records and securing its place as the highest-selling piece of sports history to ever grace the auctioneer’s stand.

Heritage Auctions’ Director of Sports Auctions Chris Ivy remarked on the significance of the jersey going up for grabs.

“This is essentially the Mona Lisa. It’s a very mythical moment that crosses over not only in baseball history, but American history, pop culture history. We’re still talking about it 100 years later, which is one of the reasons why I think it’s the most significant piece of sports memorabilia in the world. When it hits that new record, high tide raises all boats. I think more people are going to be interested in this hobby.”

Fanfare aside, Ruth’s “called shot” has been a topic of endless speculation. Did the guy really point to center field, predicting his legendary home run? Or was it a taunt aimed at the Cubs’ dugout?

While the footage remains ambiguous (and too grainy for a 4K BluRay adaptation), the aura surrounding that moment isn’t up for debate. It’s a blend of myth, reality, and a bit of melancholy for baseball fanatics who yearn for the baseball’s contentiousness before playback cameras covered every inch of the diamond.

This particular jersey, steeped in lore, was meticulously authenticated through photo-matching to ensure that, beyond any shadow of a doubt, this was the jersey worn by The Great Bambino himself.

With experts and collectors agreeing on its significance, the auction became a fierce battleground that the gavel could hardly umpire.

The winning bid surpassed the previous record-holder, Mickey Mantle’s rookie card, which sold for $12.6 million and more than doubled the amount.

For a league without salary caps, it seems there are collectors with no spending limits either.

While the buyer remains anonymous, the impact of this sale will likely ripple across the memorabilia market. Or perhaps it’s a boiling point signaling the final days of ecstasy before Rome falls? Nobody can say for sure, but it could very well be that it’s the highest-selling piece of sports memorabilia in our lifetimes.
