Taylor Fritz put on an electric display of hard-court excellence against Frances Tiafoe in the men’s singles semi-final, and the 26-year-old Californian was the first American to compete in the US Open finals since 2005 during the nail-biting, Pimm’s-Cup-chugging final against Jannik Sinner yesterday.
Sinner, hailing from Italy, secured Grand Slam #2 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, to claim the US Open men’s championship on Sunday in New York.
In other words, it’s over.
Before everyone scurries to the exit for autographs and the commemorative US Open drinking cups hit eBay, I want to congratulate the style champions sporting their best looks on the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center grounds this year.
Unlike Wimbledon’s dress code with smart casual as a bare minimum, the US Open attracts a uniquely stylish crowd of onlookers. No other event on earth brings together state-of-the-art performance activewear, classic prep, and one of New York’s main exports: street style.
With contestants (and plenty of spectators) now en route to their PJs parked at Teterboro Airport, let’s take a look at some of my favorite menswear moments from the 2024 US Open.
Simple Elegance
Whether it be musical performances, style, or infuriatingly good looks, John Mayer is no opening act—except for this list.
The guitar prodigy went with his usual formula: casually refined with a Japanese twist. In this case, he hit the grounds in pleated trousers, a white tee, and the Indigo Camping Trailer (sub-label of Mayer’s favorite brand, Visvim) Free Edge Shirt.
It’s John Mayer, though. He could’ve arrived in a hospital gown and I’d still rave about it.
Italian Tailoring
It’s no coincidence why Atif Ali goes by the Instagram handle @dapper_ali—the guy put on a masterclass of Italian tailoring that even Jannik Sinner could admire.
Between the rich texture of his linen shirt and blazer combo, the matching pocket square, and the gorgeous patina on the leather espadrilles, Atif’s whole getup is a powerful reminder to have fun with suiting.
When you can execute a formal outfit with four different colors and look this good, nobody’s going to give you a hard time about wearing white pants after Labor Day.
Thoughtfully Colorful
I like to think Yang Zhang paced back and forth in his room with stacks of reference material on every surface for months before serving this ace in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Pistachio-colored suits are enjoying a huge moment right now, and with a Pimm’s Cup in hand, the melon-ball garnish compliments the green color theme he’s got going on. And the green Dior x Birkenstock Tokio Mules? You can’t tell me that isn’t a reference to a very relevant piece of sporting equipment.
Was it a calculated outfit or a big-brained ensemble that came naturally? Doesn’t matter to me, it’s one of my favorite looks from this year.
Suave Sportif
Utilizing a 1:1 mix of sporty and sartorial, @fabiolimaw combined athleticism and sophistication—defining elements of tennis culture—and smashed it across the net.
The monotoned color palette suggests formal wear, but dressing down an ultra-structured blazer and a dress shirt with low-top sneakers and Van Cleef jewelry is “dressing for the occasion” in it’s most stylish form.
Vanilla Formal
Hugh Jackman is immune to looking sloppy solely because of how classically handsome he is.
What I appreciate about him the most is that instead of onboarding the first LA stylist bombing his manager’s inbox with pleas of dressing the Australian A-lister in streetwear, Jackman always leans into a timeless appearance.
Is he shifting the culture with a navy suit over a white dress shirt? Absolutely not. But it’s (expectedly) fitted to a T while serving as an example to all men that a salt-and-pepper beard can be a sleek accessory to a dark-colored suit.
A Pinch of Patriotism
On anyone else besides Matthew McConaughey, wearing an American flag bandana headband-style is reserved for beer Olympics on the frat house lawn.
When you’re a handsome Texan with a net worth almost as high as your public adoration, you can get away with these kinds of things. Either way, a snow-white blazer and collarless linen shirt turn the star-spangled bandana into a centerpiece, and that was the right move here.
He can, and will, keep getting away with this.
Like its golf counterpart of the same name, arriving well-dressed is baseline behavior for US Open attendees.
While the trophy may have been won on the court, a host of style competitions unfolded on the sidelines over the course of two weeks.
From effortlessly cool, globally inspired looks to masterful displays of classic tailoring, fashion enthusiasts, celebrity spotters, and amateur tennis players find equal value in the cost of admission.
