I live in New York City—gorgeous in the fall, but brutal during the summer.
I wish I could go around without getting soaked in sweat from head to toe, especially while wearing boxer briefs, but this has proved to be quite the pipe dream.
If you’re a guy who hates an evening pit stop at home to change out of your sweaty garments, you know the struggle.
I’ve been in this situation so many times that I could do it in my sleep. Forget about last-minute boxer swaps, what about all of the times I’m discreetly fidgeting with the bottom hem of my underwear because they’re riding up? No man should be subjected to that.
After repeated adjustments and readjustments, I wondered if there were lightweight, breathable boxer briefs available in the market.
PSD claims to be just this, so I picked up a few of their styles to
What Is PSD Underwear?
PSD was started in 2007 by brothers Curt and Ryan Flaitz to create comfortable, and stylish, underwear for both men and women. They take your traditional cotton briefs up a notch with funky designs.
And unlike standard Calvin Klein pairs, PSD’s underwear are designed for you to be able to workout in as well.
They describe them as “premium, affordable underwear made by and built for athletes, trendsetters, or people who just really love underwear.”
PSD’s boxer briefs are made from a polyester and elastane four-way stretch material. They feature a flatlock seam, a soft microfiber blend band, and breathable sealed MicroMesh pouch.
Things to Consider Before Buying
If you’ve owned Hanes or any other brands you get from a department store, then you know you can get a multipack that equates to just a few bucks per pair. A single pair of PSD’s boxer briefs is almost $30, which sounds crazy, especially if you can get a great bargain on a three pack.
While they can be a bit pricey, it’s an investment in a quality boxer brief that’s going to last you a long time. They also have three packs and a “bundle builder” which lets you save up to 35%, which is great if you’re planning on stocking up.
Whether you prefer the designs of your boxers to be neutral or eye-catching, PSD has it all. I was surprised to find that despite their loud branding, their briefs have uber-comfortable tech blends, anti-chafe seams, and sturdy waistbands, whereas most other brands make you choose between cool aesthetics and comfort-minded features.
My Hands-On Review
PSD Solids Standard Length
I ordered samples to see what the hype was all about and in a few days they landed at my doorstep. They offer free shipping when your order is over $75.
Each boxer brief was packaged in a sleek, black, zip-top bag, with the message “Wear Your Life.”
The first thing you’ll see on any pair of PSD boxer briefs is the brand logo on the elastic waistband of each pair. It’s all around the thick waistband.
I find the logo very appealing, especially after learning that people like Kyrie Irving and LeBron James have also worn the brand, which made it a great hit.
After carefully looking at every detail, I pulled on the PSD Solids Standard Length. They actually felt like a pair of long johns in a shorts version. They’re also not as tight or snug as other boxer briefs I’ve worn.
I decided to wear them for the entire day while cleaning my studio apartment. After a few times bending down to clear the bathtub, mopping the floor, and organizing the cabinets, the legs didn’t ride up. Point: PSD.
I also like the standard 7” length because most boxer briefs seem to look more like the short, old-school briefs than the actual compression shorts that they are.
The PSD Solids Standard Length come down right above the kneecap, which in my opinion is great for guys who are lifting heavy weights. Short boxer briefs tend to ride up into the crotch, which gives you an atomic wedgie without your consent. They do have a mid length option that are five inches, for those who like shorter styles.
I like the standard 7” length because most boxer briefs seem to look more like the short, old-school briefs than the actual compression shorts that they are. As an avid weight lifter, the extra support down the leg is welcomed alongside the fabric's silky texture.
PSD Modal Solids
Next, I slipped on the PSD Modal Solids. I’m not going to lie, I don’t own any red underwear and the bright blood color that I received was the most unique pair I’ve seen.
These have an open front pocket, which is great for easy trips to the bathroom. Ideally no one will be seeing them, but they do look good with a pair of black pants to spruce up your look for the night.
The modal blend is 47% modal, 47% cotton, and 6% elastane, so it’s a bit more performance oriented than cotton, but also isn’t fully made of synthetic fibers.
I walked around in my apartment to see if there was a difference in how this pair felt. Turn’s out, it’s buttery soft and feels like a second layer skin.
I’d say the major difference between PSD’s other fabrics blend and the modal blend is that the former is something you’d wear for the gym and the modal is better for everyday use, as it feels more like cotton.
These have an open front pocket, which is great for easy trips to the bathroom. Ideally no one will be seeing them, but the bright-red color contrasts with a pair of black pants to spruce up your look for the night. The modal is pure dance-all-night comfort.
PSD Cool Mesh
To keep up with the flashy vibe, the Cool Mesh underwear I tried has a $100 bill design along with bright paint drips. This is a little different than my usual—I like to keep it simple and classy.
PSD’s Cool Mesh fabric is another polyester-elastane mixture and they combine mesh panels in the front and back to give extra airflow.
They don’t have a pocket in the front unfortunately, but they do have the same anti-chafe seam which is beneficial for being on the go.
I could definitely tell the difference as I wore them throughout the day. They’re super breathable so as I mentioned before, PSD’s Cool Mesh is a major bonus for a New Yorker in the summer.
That being said, I would probably reserve these for workouts or especially hot days but would leave them at home in the winter because they’re just not as soft as the modal version.
These are definitely a showcase of PSD's creative vision. They don’t have a pocket in the front unfortunately, but they do have the same anti-chafe seam which is beneficial for being on the go. Either way, the mesh texture provides even more airflow over the other PSD fabrics I tested.
What Do Other Reviewers Say?
The reviews for PSD are overwhelmingly positive, with 98% of customers recommending them (based on over 54,000 reviews just on the Standard style). Customers give PSD underwear five stars because they fit true to size and they love the soft fabric, breathable pouch, and fun collection of designs to choose from.
The only negative feedback I saw on the website is the shipping time. As expected, this happens a lot and is really in the hands of the carrier, but the five star reviews outweigh the negative ones.
My Thoughts Overall
What I Like
- PSD boxer briefs are true to size and come in sizes from XS to 2XL.
- The Solids Standard Length and Cool Mesh boxer briefs have a four-way stretch polyester and elastane material.
- You can move around without them riding up.
- The designs are super unique and fun.
What I Don’t Like
- Only one style has a front pocket for easy restroom trips.
- They do have a cotton version, but it’s not 100% cotton (it has 5% elastane).
Who Is PSD For?
PSD is for guys who want to experience all day comfort when they’re lounging around at home, running errands, or heading to the gym. If you’re tired of basic cotton briefs that don’t have any technical features or simply get too sweaty, you’ll appreciate PSD’s athletic fabrics and cuts.
The Verdict
Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect from PSD, a brand with printed boxers featuring anything from South Park to Liquid Death.
Granted, only one of my boxers had a wacky design compared to the Modal Solids and Solids Standard Length pairs I scored, but regardless of what they look like, they have comfortable fabric, breathability, and top-notch construction in common.
Of all three, I’m suprisingly most excited to wear the Cool Mesh. The electric blue and black waistband is an awesome hit of color, and the mesh fabric’s breathability is superb.
