Our faces contain over 40 muscles and are capable of over 10,000 unique expressions.
They are often the first thing about us others see. And, they’re the thing about us that communicates, well, the most about us—our identity.
How we choose to dress matters, of course. It says a lot about our professions, our hobbies, and—to some extent—what we value.
I’d argue, though, your face and how you style your beard says even more. And, you can certainly spend a great deal here as well. You can find mass-market grooming tools with 17 attachments (which you’ll inevitably lose) for relatively cheap. Or, you can spend a small fortune on one with diminishing returns.
Manscaped’s Chairman Pro Package, with all of its bells and whistles, seems to fit a comfortable slot with build quality and performance to match. But does it live up to the buzz, or is it just another overpriced kit? Allow me to split the hairs.
What Is Manscaped?
Traditionally, men shave their faces and little else. Trimming—or ‘manscaping’—the body hair we all have just isn’t a visual focal point unlike our facial hair.
Manscaped is a grooming brand designed by men, for men. Created in 2016 by Las Vegas-based Paul Tran, the company’s goal is to change the narrative around men’s face and body grooming.
The brand offers a full range of grooming products for the body. Most notably (or infamously), they also cover the groin area. Names like ‘the Crop Preserver’ and Ball Aftershave Lotion generate coverage, and make them the butt (excuse the pun) of a few internet memes. But, from what I’ve read, the product largely delivers.
Manscaped isn’t a company seeking to make a buck with cheeky (sorry again) names, though. Men’s health and hygiene remain the core mission of the brand.
Testicular cancer is the most common kind for men ages 15-35. They partner with the Testicular Cancer Society to spread awareness and encourage men to check themselves every month along with an option to donate to TCS at checkout.
Things to Consider Before Buying
The Chairman Pro is an interchangeable system with an electric foil shaver and a beard trimmer. There are, of course, a few things to consider before buying.
First, do you tend to keep a longer beard? If so, this might not be the best choice. The stubble-guard gets pretty close. The Beard Hedger might be a better option for you.
Second, how obsessive are you with your stubble? The Chairman offers two guard lengths. It should be plenty good for most guys, but if you need to dial it into the exact length, it might not be ideal.
Third, how do you react to foil razors? Perhaps you, like me, grew up with an old foil razor and held it in one spot for too long. If you tend to experience irritation, sticking with a safety razor might be the better option.
My Hands-On Review of the Chairman Pro Package
“…another grooming tool?! Really?” I can hear you now. Particularly if you’re reading this around the holidays. But, a good grooming tool is something that, ideally, you’ll buy once and have for the better part of a decade. See, I’ve been through a few, and I look for a couple things in particular.
First, I want ergonomic design. I want it to sit in my hand and not feel like it’ll slip out.
Second, I need the battery to last and keep a constant rate of speed throughout. I’ve had two trimmers from major international brands with battery lives so atrocious they’d make it through three sessions before dying almost without warning. At least once, I’ve had to shave completely because the tool died mid-session.
Third, it’s got to be sharp. For some reason, people seem to believe you’re less liable to cut yourself with a less-sharp knife. In reality, it’s quite the opposite. The same is true with razors or trimmers. Pulling, plucking, or catching is a no-go for me.
Features and Capabilities
The Chairman Pro is new to the Manscaped family. The ideal candidate is, well, someone like me. I work a ‘professional’ job in which I am either on camera or in an office every day, often speaking with seasoned executives or ex-military personnel. A multi-inch beard is harder to get away with these days. I need the ability to keep that ‘five o’clock shadow’ look.
The device itself fits well in my hand. The whole thing from base to attachment tip is about the size of a cell phone. The hard-plastic body also feels heavy, but in a premium way. I wouldn’t predict any dings, creaks, or a split chassis even after multiple drops on bathroom tile.
The ergonomic design and a few clever features help stay secure as I’m moving the shaver. There’s a subtle grip around the majority of the handle. I also particularly like the notch near the top where my pointer finger can rest. It’s easy to guide that way.
Speaking of guidance, the Chairman Pro includes an LED light on the chassis. Only functional when the motor is running (to save battery, I guess), it’s supposedly there to help you see hairs you normally wouldn’t. Either way, 75 minutes on a full charge lasts a month of twice-a-week maintenance, so the battery life gets high marks from me considering it has a LCD screen.
Like all Manscaped products, this is fully waterproof in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes. So, if you drop in the sink, it’ll work just fine. Or, you should be able to use it in the shower, if that’s your thing. It’s easy to rinse clean.
If for whatever reason it does succumb to moisture, Manscaped only offers a 90-day warranty on the device. For such a high-end shaver, I’d have liked to see a warranty closer to a year.
The cutting tool itself, called FlexAdjust, uses stainless steel blades which gently spring back and forth. I could tell it definitely reduced friction and allowed the tool to work with me rather than against me—a dead giveaway for any lackluster shaving tool. You have the option to let it work back and forth, or lock into place at two different increments.
Included are both a foil shaver and stubble attachment. The components attach securely via a magnetic locking mechanism, which connects with a satisfying click.
The stubble guard has two different, additional guards. I couldn’t find exactly how long each of them are but, going out on a limb, I’d guess 1 and 2 mm each.
Throwing in the Face Shave Soother and Power Shave Gel was a smart move on Manscaped’s part. I normally use foam, but I’m a full believer now that gel is the key to an affortless glide for the large surface area of an electric buzzer. The fresh green & light woods fragrance of the Face Shave Soother is also nice touch—refreshing yet masculine.
A carrying case is always a welcomed addition to an all-in-one kit. Manscaped’s hard-shell design was the right move considering this is a rather high-tech device, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of space saving. I usually throw my shaver in my dopp kit when travelling, so I don’t find myself taking the carrying case with me unless I have room to spare.
Performance
Now that we’ve covered the bells and whistles, what works? I’ve not been completely clean-shaven in over seven years, so I’ve mostly used the stubble guard. And, yes, a stubble guard it is. If you tend to like a week’s growth or heavy stubble, this might cut a little too close for you.
But, if you like to keep a couple days’ worth, the Chairman Pro might be right up your street. And, if you like a true, George Michael-esque ‘designer’ stubble, the close cropped one is going to work wonders for you. That’s especially true if you have darker, coarse beard hair.
While I suppose you can work the direction of the shaver any way you want, I’ve found going with the grain works best.
I’m also pleasantly surprised by the foil shaver. No pulling, burning, or anything like that. It cuts quite close. Impressively close. My wife actually commented on how smooth my neck turned out.
I’m also a fan of the other accessories. Usually I’m not much of a shave gel guy, preferring those with little or no alcohol because, according to Patrick Bateman, it dries your face and makes you look older. But, that’s not a concern here.
The Power Shave Gel comes dermatologist-tested and uses witch hazel and apple extract. The face soother aftershave serum is a comfortable, cooling sensation which works really well on parts of my face I’ve used on both foil shaver and my normal safety razor.
What Do Other Reviewers Say?
Reviews for the Chairman Pro Package are largely positive.
Customers seem to say it performs well and keeps the hairs in check. My experience with the foil is largely mirrored by other reviews I’ve read- it gets really close without nicking, cutting or anything like that.
But, on the rare occasion you don’t get along with the product, a 30-day return policy is a generous time window considering it’s a self-care product.
What I Like
- On top of the ergonomic design, the Chairman Pro a great size for my hand and easy to control.
- The magnetic lock is quite satisfying—it also tells me it’s fully locked in. Having owned flimsy shavers before makes me triple check, and I don’t have to do that now!.
- The guards are a good length for how I prefer my stubble.
- The unit has a great battery life.
- Including the Face Shave Soother and Power Shave Gel makes it a worthy upgrade over the shaver itself.
What I Don’t Like
- I’m not keen on the logo or the branding—a literal picture of a set of testicles on my grooming tool.
- The LED light is a bit of a gimmick as I can’t imagine a situation where I’d need to shave in the dark.
Who Is The Chairman Pro Package For?
The Chairman Pro Package is a great fit for someone like me. While I have held positions in a rather relaxed environment with the freedom to grow out a two-inch beard (and I did), that’s just not the case now. But, I’ve not been completely clean-shaven in over seven years. I don’t know what I’d look like otherwise and am a little scared to find out. This helps me hit the happy medium.
The Verdict
There’s a mission at Manscaped, and I think it’s important.
At the outset, I wrote about how important our faces are. They communicate to the world not only who we are, but how we see ourselves. Your grooming style is at the core of that self image, and it’s well worth investing in.
If you tend to maintain a shorter beard length, the Chairman Pro Package can be very good. The device snaps together seamlessly, feels solid in the hand, and easily maneuvers around the face—especially with the springy and flexible trimmer.
It’s not the cheapest on the market, but you’re getting a well-constructed product that does what it says on the tin along with a few extras to elevate the shaving ritual.
I appreciated how ergonomic and easy it is to use, especially with the magnetic attachments and flexible blades that made shaping my beard simple. The battery life impressed me too—it lasted through multiple sessions without slowing down. If you’re into short stubble, this bundle is a one-stop shop.
