When I was younger, nothing was a bigger let-down than getting underwear for Christmas. Now that I’ve matured, I realize that a well-made boxer is one of the best gifts to receive.
I like to keep my life simple, even down to my socks and underwear.
I’m not as picky with my socks because they’re always on my smelly feet. But boxers are a different story.
I keep things basic by wearing one type of brief. One that’s comfortable whether hot or cold, provides support where needed, and most importantly, is so soft you hardly even know it’s there.
You’d be quite surprised how hard it is to find a pair of drawers that align those three things.
Well, I scoured the internet for the best undergarments to see how they stack up, and I’ve found my trophy pair.
If you find yourself crab-walking in a pair of constricting value-pack briefs, check out the following options.
6 Most Comfortable Men’s Boxer Briefs in 2023
Best Overall: All Citizens Elite II Boxer Briefs
All Citizens aims to take something mundane like men’s underwear and bring it to the next level.
Everything was taken back to the drawing board with the Elite II Boxer Brief. One of their best-sellers, it infuses technology like sustainable Re:Luxe Performance Microfiber to compete with other top brands on the market that offer technical fabrics more comfortable than cotton. But what about it ranks it the best overall?
A few things set the Elite II Boxer Briefs apart from the rest. Built-in air vents (called Breathe Zones) on the lower back and between the legs to stop swamp crotch and keep you dry all day.
The Paradise Pocket II is a key feature of the Elite II Boxer Briefs – the patented design keeps your balls separated from your thighs, so no more unwanted thigh-stickage.
Nothing is nastier than letting your underwear sit defenseless against bacteria at the bottom of a locker. Their performance fabric is anti-odor to kill bacteria instantly, and their care tag doubles as a hanging loop to keep your post-workout briefs clean(er) and make drying easier.
If you’re someone who enjoys soft, stretchy tech fabrics, you’ll love the Elite II Boxer Briefs. Their Re:Luxe Performance Microfiber wicks moisture, dries quickly, and keeps a close fit to prevent the dreaded bunching we’ve all experienced.
The horizontal fly for easy access in the restroom is a distinct design choice with these. I don’t know about you, but the vertical flys that are standard on men’s underwear can be a real pain—I wish I found this sooner.
Some reviewers share that the elastic around the leg openings, designed to prevent the briefs from riding up, can be too tight for people with larger thighs, but this should only affect a subset of guys who have really big thighs (think Olympic lifters).
So if you have larger thighs but a waist that fits the waist size perfectly, the briefs might still feel uncomfortable. Knowing this, it’s best to confirm your sizing on their website before placing an order.
What I Like
- Paradise Pocket II design that keeps things organized and prevents embarrassing adjustments.
- Strategically placed airflow vents for ventilation down there.
- Performance fabric that’s sweat-wicking, quick-drying, anti-odor, stretchy and breathable.
- Hang loop to keep briefs off of dirty surfaces and improve drying.
- Horizontal fly that allows easy access when using the restroom.
What I Don’t Like
- The elastic leg opening can be too tight for larger thighs.
What Other Reviewers Say
It’s clear from customer reviews that guys see the value in the innovation found in the Elite II Boxer Brief. Standout mentions include the convenience of the horizontal fly, smooth fabric texture, and leg openings that stay put all day.
Despite the few complaints regarding the leg opening, I found just as many reviews saying these briefs are comfy during activities as ones saying they’re comfy during downtime. The overall sentiment is that these briefs are a versatile choice, ready to rise to any occasion.
The Verdict
The Elite Boxer II Brief from All Citizens is the most comfortable men’s brief because of its hyper-designed ventilation which provides both comfort and moisture-wicking benefits.
Packed full of other features such as the horizontal fly, hang loop, and Paradise Pocket compartment, All Citizens shows that ordinary underwear can be improved upon in many ways, making these briefs up for any challenge.

Most Breathable: Tani Silktouch TENCEL™ Modal Air Boxer Brief
Our founder, Dean Stephens, reviewed an array of products from Tani and shared great things about them, so I was excited to see what the praise was all about.
The Silktouch TENCEL Modal Air Boxer Brief might have a minimalist appearance, but do they have the qualities you need to make them your preferred undergarment?
The fabric is a defining factor of how comfortable any pair of underwear is. The TENCEL™ Modal x Air fabrication boasts a premium feel with added moisture control.
But what is TENCEL™? For those unfamiliar with this material, I’ll explain…
TENCEL™ is a brand name for a natural fabric called lyocell that is sourced from beech wood, so these boxers have a soft texture similar to cotton.
One thing I found interesting about the Tani Silktouch TENCEL Modal Air Boxers is that the waistband is wrapped in the same fabric that the boxers are made of.
I have owned underwear that have a coarse, itchy waistband. Even when on to a nice pair of boxers, this can be the nail in the coffin that retires them from your brief lineup. This elastic wrapped in soft fabric solves that issue. The waistband on these is anti-roll as well.
If having a fly is important to you, they might miss the mark in that department as they don’t have one.
Without a fly, the Silktouch TENCEL™ Modal Air Boxers rely on the fabric for breathability. A lack of vents to allow airflow can make things clammy down there, which becomes apparent during workouts or hot days.
What I Like
- Natural Tencel fabric that is soft and breathable.
- Fabric-wrapped elastic to prevent irritated skin.
- Anti-roll waistband for maintained shape and reduced movement.
What I Don’t Like
- Lack of fly reduces airflow and a waistband that must be pulled down when using the restroom.
What Other Reviewers Say
Among all reviews I found on the web, customers seemed pleased with the Tencel fabric and the quality of the waistband. Some reviewers said that the briefs run a bit small, so it’s a good idea to confirm sizing before you buy.
The Verdict
The Silktouch TENCEL Modal Air Boxer Brief is good for those who prefer their underwear fabric to be soft to the touch and breathable.
If you seek a boxer that does it all, these will leave something to be desired as they rely on the breathability of the fabric alone to cool things down while active.

Best Prints: Shinesty Ball Hammock® Pouch Underwear
Shinesty’s Ball Hammock Pouch Underwear is the Big Mac of their undergarment menu—it’s what keeps people coming back.
You can imagine why just couple pairs wouldn’t be enough when you see the multitude of cheeky designs they come in. The variety is great, but the fabric of these briefs deserves some credit as well.
The Micromodal, similar to the Tencel fabrication of the previous option, is soft and comfortable to feel. Plus, the weave offers a 4-way stretch, which gives you some freedom of movement.
You’ll find a fabric divider that gives the Ball Hammock Pouch Underwear its name.. As a daily subway commuter in New York City, I can see the Ball Hammock providing some comfort while going up and down the stairs.
The best part about the Ball Hammocks is the option to pick length and fly options. After choosing your desired print, Shinesty lets you choose between fly or no fly, trunks, briefs, and long-length briefs. If you like the designs that Shinesty offers but prefer the absence of an inseam, you’re good to go.
What I Like
- Plenty of fun designs that add excitement to your underwear drawer.
- Multiple length and fly options.
What I Don’t Like
- Lack of support in leg opening that can bunch up & pouch design is not the best.
What Other Reviewers Say
Many of the guys who reviewed the Ball Hammock Pouch Underwear dig the fun prints & designs.
Several reviewers mentioned the smooth fabric caused uncomfortable bunching in the legs as they weren’t tight enough.
The Verdict
If design/printoptions are important to you, the Shinesty Ball Hammock Pouch Underwear is the way to go.
The Micromodal fabric and Ball Hammock integration provide comfort and soft feel., but the lack of support around the leg opening might cause these to ride up.
Shinesty’s paradICE™ Cooling Ball Hammock® boxer briefs are the ultimate cooling, moisture-wicking underwear. They're ideal for hot weather or if you’re a guy who generally runs hot and needs a little extra help cooling down. If coolness is your top priority during the workday, workouts, or weekend outings, these will keep clamminess far, far away.
Most Adaptable: Ballerz Premium Boxer Brief
Veteran-owned Ballerz is on a mission to make the perfect pair of underwear for men.
Now, we didn’t always have all of this ‘support’ in the crotch region of our underwear. Back when I started caring about the fly in my briefs, it was either fly or no fly. No pouches, hammocks, or anything like that.
If you just want a straightforward and adaptable pair of well made, nice feeling boxers, I recommend the Premium Boxer Briefs.
Don’t worry though, you’ll still find qualities that define a nice pair of underwear: Moisture wicking lyocell fabric, a thick waistband, and breathability.
The fabric is 95% Tencel and 5% Spandex, which gives these a close fit with plenty of support. Ballerz lets you know these will fit tight when you first put them on, but will gradually contour to your body with each wear.
Larger thighs can stretch out boxers that come new with an accommodating fit. A loose feel out of the box can quickly become too roomy after a few wears. If you relate to this struggle, the Premium Boxer Briefs can provide a nicer fit for the long haul.
Everyone has their tastes, but if you lean towards minimal designs, you might not like the heavily branded Ballerz waistband. They also come in only 3 different colors, grey, red, and black, which is few compared to other options on the market.
What I Like
- Form-fitting design that adapts to your unique shape.
- Detailed sizing requirements that help you choose the right size for your waist and weight.
- Extra room in crotch section compared to standard underwear.
What I Don’t Like
- Heavily branded with minimal color options.
- No ball pouch which leads to some readjustments during the day.
What Other Reviewers Say
I counted three different reviews that say something along the lines of “it’s like they’re not even there!” With that in mind, the gentle Tencel-Spandex combo seems to do the trick.
Also, interestingly enough, I’ve seen a few females who bought them for their husbands and then ended up keeping them for themselves… take note!
The Verdict
Thanks to the fabric blend that adapts to your body’s unique shape, the Ballerz Premium Boxer Briefs are ideal if other options stretch out quickly despite being your size.
The minimal color options and heavy branding might not agree with everyone’s style preferences. However, if I had to choose between style and comfort for underwear, I’d definitely choose comfort because, well you know, not too many people would be seeing them.
Ballerz have delivered on what most guys want in a pair of briefs. Fabric that actually wicks moisture and support without feeling like your boys are being strangled. Although the initial investment is pretty steep for a single pair, Ballerz is a great choice for any guy who wants all day comfort and no more readjustments below the belt.
Best for Matching Your Partner: MeUndies Boxer Brief
MeUndies was my introduction into the world of nice men’s underwear after they burst onto the scene with a “Softer Than Soft” promise and a ton of fun designs.
The brand has a vibrant selection of prints featuring things like animals, junk food, or characters from your favorite franchise such as Toy Story or Batman. Solid colors are also available for a less eccentric appearance.
We’re not just going for style points though, what makes guys want to rock MeUndies Boxer Briefs? Let’s take a look at the fabric.
You’ll find a 92% Micromodal 8% elastane blend on these, similar to the Shinesty Ball Hammocks. Despite this, these might fit you better than Shinesty briefs as they contain the added elastane which provide a closer fit.
MeUndies didn’t incorporate any technology that caters to the male anatomy with these either. If you want added reinforcement for the boys, you’ll have to continue your search.
These boxers can provide comfort and support during work days or errands around town. The casual design of the Boxer Briefs means they don’t offer advanced features other options in the market do. If you’re here looking for comfort and versatility, these probably won’t check every box.
What I Like
- Silky smooth Micromodal/elastane fabric.
- Wide array of colors and prints that can be mixed and matched.
- No-roll elastic waistband for maintained fit.
- His and hers collections for matching with your partner.
What I Don’t Like
- No comfort improvements in the crotch region.
- Casual design doesn’t make it the best option for for high intensity exercise.
What Other Reviewers Say
With almost 6,000 5-star reviews on their webpage, it’s clear that guys love the prints & designs of MeUndies Boxer Briefs.
The diversity of prints they’re available in make them an easy gift. However, some buyers have noticed that the fabric has a tendency to pill after several washes.
The Verdict
MeUndies Boxer Briefs provide a silky smooth experience thanks to the Micromodal/elastane blend.
They’re well worth a look if you seek comfort and style in everyday activities and are fine without any specialized support that would otherwise be good for athletic movement. Or if you want to twin out with your partner via their fun Matching Underwear range.
MeUndies makes some of the softest underwear and loungewear I’ve ever tried. While the MicroModal isn’t the greatest material for workouts, the comfort is outstanding.
Best for Outdoors: Smartwool Merino 150 Boxer Brief
You might recognize Smartwool if you’re an avid hiker or outdoor enthusiast. Since 1994, the brand has been outfitting those who love the wilderness with high quality soft goods made primarily from Merino wool.
The sound of wool underwear might make you cringe, but it’s nothing like the itchy Christmas sweater that comes to mind.
Merino wool is known for its excellent temperature control, making it suitable for all climates by keeping you cool in the heat and warm in the cold. It naturally wicks away moisture and resists odor, keeping you fresh and comfortable. Its softness and breathability add to its comfort, making it ideal for various activities.
Synthetic fibers can be a hit or miss. Some can be coarse and irritating while others so buttery smooth they feel like a second skin. The Merino 150 Boxer Briefs have an unmistakably natural feel to them. If you prefer 100% cotton clothing, you’ll find these to be comfortable for the same reason.
If you like to burn your calories outdoors, the combination of moisture control and odor management provided by Merino wool make these the best choice for those seeking legit comfort while exploring.
What I Like
- Moisture wicking and odor resistant properties of Merino wool.
- More natural feel compared briefs containing synthetic threads.
- Waistband covered in Merino to reduce friction.
What I Don’t Like
- Highest price point across all options.
- No ball pouch options which leads to lack of support.
What Other Reviewers Say
Reviews are generally pleased with these boxers. On the positive side, they praise its fast drying ability, comfort, and odor resistance, especially when used for outdoor activities like hiking and backpacking.
On the flip side, some reviewers said that the legs have a tendency to ride up and the waistband is uncomfortably thick.
The Verdict
The unique use of Merino wool in the Smartwool Merino 150 Boxer Brief allows it to manage moisture and odor effortlessly, especially under physically demanding conditions.
Some have reported the legs riding up and an uncomfortable waistband, but these shouldn’t be the case for everybody.
Smartwool taps into the needs of their key customer with these briefs, but the quality and technical benefits resonate with anyone looking for comfortable underwear.
Like other wool garments, The Merino 150 boxer brief is composed of soft, temperature regulating, odor-resisting Merino wool that will keep your package dry and comfortable even in extreme climate conditions. These are versatile enough to be worn every day and are an ideal underlayer for a long day outside hiking or adventuring in the sun.
What Makes Boxer Briefs ‘Comfortable’?
Fabric
The comfort of boxer briefs is largely dependent on the fabric used. High-quality materials like cotton, modal, or performance fabrics provide softness against the skin, reducing irritation and chafing. In addition, breathable fabrics help regulate body temperature and wick away moisture.
Waistband
A well-constructed waistband can make or break a pair of briefs. Ideally, it should be wide and flexible enough for a secure fit without digging into the skin.
Some boxer briefs come fitted with additional structure in the waistband to keep it from curling over, causing the elastic band to deform over time. Wrapping the waistband in soft fabric is another method used to reduce friction across the waist.
Technical Additions
Added features such as a contoured pouch provide better support for the male anatomy, enhancing overall comfort. Flatlock seams reduce the potential for irritation and chafing. Some brands also use mesh panels for improved ventilation, while others apply antimicrobial treatment to keep odors at bay, all contributing to a better wearing experience.
Comfort for Your Cargo
Gentlemen, you need to take good care of your parts. It’s crucial to keep these assets covered with only the most comfortable and functional briefs.
A worthy pair of undergarments need to wick moisture for intense movement, keep away the downstairs funk after getting sweating, and be so soft you’ll almost think you forgot to put them on in the first place.
After scouring the market for the best in comfortable briefs, my overall top pick is the All Citizens Elite II Boxer Brief thanks to its breezy air flow, stretchy fabric, and supportive Paradise Pocket.
FAQs
