Finding relationship help, advice, and guidance isn’t altogether simple in our tech-driven world. Sure, you can vent to your friends (whose own relationship lives may or may not be train wrecks) or you can endure a super-long waiting period to book an expensive in-person couples therapist session—but wouldn’t it be nice to find something a bit more ‘middle of the road?’

In this Relationship Hero review, we took a session to dive firsthand into how effective this service can really be in helping you to navigate your relationship problems. Here’s what we discovered.

Bottom line: I had a great experience with Relationship Hero. While the intake process is quite in-depth, overall I found the session to be valuable. The coach I matched with was highly skilled and the pricing is on point for the value you get.

Ratings:

Pros:

  • The intake process was thorough and seemed to adequately prepare my matched coach for the session.
  • My matched coach was amazing. Very skilled, smart, and professional.
  • Pricing is definitely competitive, especially when you compare it to in-person coaching, counseling, or therapy.
  • I felt that the quality of advice was very good (this coming from someone who has coached a lot of men and women on dating-related issues).

Cons:

  • The intake process could be described as ‘overwhelming’ to some people—but this isn’t really a criticism because it ended up really helping the session.
  • Some people may not be able to afford the price point (it’s competitive, but it’s still a bit of a luxury).
  • The lack of consistent site-wide pricing can make the pricing seem a little bit confusing at first (I unpack and explain this further down in the review).

As someone who’s given quite a bit of relationship advice to other people (and who’s also provided quite a bit of dating coaching to clients of my own), I’ll be the first to say that even those of us who know ‘a lot’ about dating and relationships can still benefit from someone to talk to.

Sometimes, it’s helpful to get an outside perspective on your own relationship experience.

It can also be nice to get a healthy ‘dose of reality’ from a third-party perspective—someone who’s not only trained in how healthy relationships should function but who can also provide some unbiased advice and guidance.

So, since my girlfriend and I (we’ve been dating for just over a year at this point) move closer to a possible ‘move-in-together’ date, I found myself drawn to the idea of getting another perspective—just to explore any potential blind spots I might be ignoring.

But as I looked into it, I realized that finding some good, old-fashioned relationship help and guidance (or even someone to act as an unbiased sounding board) isn’t as easy as you might think.

Sure, you can talk to your friends or family—but let’s be honest—they’re not necessarily equipped to give ‘good’ or unbiased relationship advice.

And right now, getting into an in-person therapist’s office could take months. Plus, it’s pretty expensive for the average person to just jump up and pay for that kind of service on a whim.

So when I heard about Relationship Hero, I was really curious. And I was pretty excited to give it a try.

What Is Relationship Hero?

Relationship Hero 1

Relationship Hero describes itself as the #1 relationship coaching service. Through their website, you can start working with a professional certified relationship coach pretty much immediately.

They have coaches available 24/7, and they’ve helped over 100,000 clients at this point—making them a veritable, legitimate online relationship coaching service option. Their website boasts an impressive 433,100 coaching sessions and over 70,000 5-star reviews.

As I see it, Relationship Hero is to relationship coaching what Better Help is to therapy—a modern, online option that’s more cost-effective and accessible than older models or offline options.

Founded in 2017, Relationship Hero was started to help people overcome life challenges successfully. They match you with certified coaching to help you succeed in your marriage, relationship, or dating life.

To conduct this review, I booked a session to talk about the upcoming ‘move-in’ with my girlfriend. Here’s how it went.

Things to Consider Before Buying Signing Up for a Coaching Session with Relationship Hero

About Relationship Hero

It’s important to understand what Relationship Hero does and doesn’t provide. They basically offer online relationship coaching, for any type of relationship.

This is usually interpreted as a marriage or a dating relationship, or even for single people who’d like to be in a relationship (but need a bit of help to succeed). It could also mean a relationship with a friend, a family member, a co-worker, etc.

With that being said, the ideal Relationship Hero customer would probably classify as a person who isn’t dealing with a severe, dangerous, or debilitating problem—like abuse, suicidal thoughts, thoughts of self-harm, and/or severe mental disorders or mental illness.

Here’s the thing. Relationship Hero is very specifically a relationship coaching service. As such, they’re equipped to handle a pretty wide range of typical, non-severe relationship dysfunction (like being nervous about moving in with a girlfriend, struggling to talk to girls, being frustrated with a disagreement, challenging communication issues, etc.).

They’re not equipped to handle things like severe mental, psychological, or emotional trauma, abuse, dangerous abusive relationship situations, suicidal ideations, and/or other potentially immediately harmful mental illness or situational issues.

They employ (and match you) with trained, certified relationship coaches—not therapists, psychologists, medical professionals, or law-enforcement personnel (though some of their coaches may also be therapists as well, which is just a bonus).

Relationship Hero Review

Alright.

Now, let’s dig into my actual Relationship Hero session—including the sign-up process, the intake process, the session, and some other stuff that I learned and encountered along the way.

Signing Up

relationship hero starting 2

Signing up for Relationship Hero is as simple as clicking the ‘Get Started’ button on the landing/home page. Alternatively, you could call them or email them as well.

Once you click this button, you’ll be taken to an initial intake screen where you’ll be asked about the basics of your situation.

relationship hero intake page

I chose the ‘dating advice’ option, as I felt that it was most applicable to my situation.

After you answer this initial question, they walk you through about 14 different questions asking you a range of different things. This is basically a personal information-gathering process, though they also ask you about your partner.

For example, they ask you what gender your partner is, whether or not the two of you have kids in the picture, and the overall nature of your challenge.

They also ask you some questions about self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and abuse.

This part of the process almost felt ‘clinical,’ but in a ‘relationship coach’ sense (as opposed to feeling like a medical intake).

They also take you through a relationship profiler quiz where you tell them more information about yourself.

relationship profiler quiz

Most of the questions on this quiz are self-reflective and seem to deal with the nature of how you usually feel when engaging in relationships. It takes just a few minutes to finish.

This is an example of the types of questions you’ll encounter:

relationship profiler quiz question

They also give you a space where you can write down whatever information you believe might be pertinent to the situation (I wrote down a brief history of my last two long-term relationships and why they ended, as the entire nature of my session was going to revolve around me preparing to move in with my girlfriend in the coming year).

Once you finish all of this intake information, you’ll be matched with a coach specifically chosen to fit your situation.

In my case, the coach immediately messaged me via the in-site messenger board (which you gain access to when you create an account) to start setting up a time and date for our coaching session.

There’s a calendar tool that you can use to choose not only the type of meeting (video, phone, or just messenger) but also the duration (30 minutes or an hour).

I tried to use this, but it told me that all of my coach’s sessions for the immediate future were booked.

When I communicated this to my coach, however, they told me that they would check their schedule and find a good time to book our session.

Later on that day, I received a notification (via text and email) that they had found a time for me.

It worked, and we booked the session.

They were literally able to fit me into what looked like an already full schedule the next day—so the time between booking and the actual session was only one day (which, in my mind, was incredibly fast).

Pricing

On their home page, they cite that pricing ranges from $80 to $250 per hour and that they charge less for larger purchases.

The session that I booked was basically what’s called an Exploratory Session, and is offered to new clients. The coach I was matched with typically charges $200 for a one-hour Exploratory Session.

Session pricing

This coach also, however, offered a plethora of different coaching pricing offers, including:

  • A 1-hour Introductory Couple’s Session for $250
  • 10 hours of coaching for $2,200
  • 4 hours of coaching for $1,150
  • 1 hour of coaching for $295
  • 45 minutes of coaching for $225
  • 30 minutes of coaching for $195

See, every coach has their own coaching packages and options—so there’s not really a standardized pricing model that spans the entire site.

And this is where things can start to get a little bit confusing (in fact, some reviews of the service that I read before booking my own session discussed this).

At first glance, the pricing can seem a bit complicated—especially if you’re just browsing the site and trying to get a quick look at how much it’s going to cost.

You need to dig just a little bit to find the specific pricing numbers. Once you get matched with a coach and start going through the process of booking the session, choosing a pricing model becomes really easy.

It’s just important to understand that pricing is coach specific, not consistent on a site-wide scale.

The Session

We scheduled a one-hour video session. And I must say, my first impression was a good one.

My matched coach read through my notes and apparently really took them seriously. This made me feel like my situation was really ‘understood’ before we even started the call—which enabled us to get right to work.

My coach also laid out a very brief plan for how they wanted the call to go (and how they thought they could best help me). And this approach was extremely helpful.

Listen, I’ve been around the world of dating coaching for a long time. I understand relationship dynamics and I’m constantly educating myself on them every day.

But at the same time, it’s easy to get ‘boxed in’ in your own mind and overlook stuff—and honestly, this session really opened my eyes to some of my own trauma responses, fears, and apprehensions about long-term relationships that, honestly, I walked away from this coaching call feeling like I needed to address as I move forward toward this important relationship milestone with my girlfriend.

The coach was kind and empathetic. They listened to me and responded to help the conversation along.

Post-Session

My Relationship Hero session was actually really therapeutic and helpful for me. I walked away with a pretty firm action plan of what steps I should take (mostly emotional stuff on my part) to help prepare myself for this upcoming transition.

My coach also followed this up with a written plan/session notes (which were really well-written and tailored specifically to me) that I found extremely helpful.

Here’s an example of the depth of the notes I was left with:

session notes

I questioned whether or not I should show these (being that they’re so personal and are literally the notes from my coaching session), but here at The Adult Man, the goal is to help men become better men.

And honestly, I think it’s important for everyone to know that it’s ok to have ‘stuff’ that you need to work on—and that there’s no shame in talking to someone, getting an outside perspective, and enlisting the help of a professional to help you improve your life.

All in all, the session was amazing—and was worth a lot more than the value of the $200 price tag in the emotional baggage it helped me to unpack within myself.

No cap—this coach was legitimately skilled and very good at their craft.

What Do Other Reviewers Say About Relationship Hero?

For the most part, everything I’ve read about Relationship Hero has been positive. People report that the service is actually a major value for the money and that it does wonders for helping you through confusing or difficult relationship obstacles.

Negative reviews are pretty rare. Some reviews cite the service as costing enough to be deemed ‘expensive,’ while others voiced some limited concerns over the fact that when you hire a coach through Relationship Hero, you’re not necessarily getting advice from a ‘licensed therapist.’

Relationship Hero Alternatives

Our Relationship

Our Relationship®

Our Relationship is an online service that offers self-driven programs for couples designed to deepen their relationships and solve problems, and they give you the option to purchase coaching calls that you can use throughout the programs.

It’s similar to Relationship Hero in the sense that it’s designed to help you improve your relationship—but it differs in the sense that what you’re actually purchasing is a program with the option for coaching, instead of a dedicated coaching package.

Going through a program as a couple without a coach is $79, while going through it with a coach costs $199.

It’s less expensive, but your coaching calls are also a bit shorter (because the focus is really on the program).

Growing Self

Growing Self Home Page

Growing Self is a counseling service that empowers couples to learn, heal, and grow together from the comfort of their own home through video counseling sessions with marriage and family therapists.

It’s similar to Relationship Hero in the sense that they offer online, video-powered help for couples—but it’s different in the sense that what you’re getting is actually evidence-based, scheduled couples counseling as opposed to on-demand relationship coaching.

This service feels more like ‘traditional couples therapy’ with an online option (as they have in-person offices as well).

You can purchase a 45-minute session for anywhere between $65 and $160.

Better Help

Better Help

Better Help is really similar to Relationship Hero in the sense that it’s easy to access at any time and can be utilized completely virtually on your own terms.

However, it differs in the sense that it seems more geared toward individual therapy, while Relationship Hero is totally devoted to relationship coaching.

(Though, it should be noted that Better Help does have a couples therapy option as well.)

To me, Relationship Hero feels a lot like the Better Help of the relationship coaching world.

Better Help charges $60 to $90 per week for therapy, billed monthly. But exact pricing is also dependent upon location, preferences, and therapist availability.

My Thoughts Overall on Relationship Hero

What I Like

  • The coaches seem trained, knowledgeable, and effective.
  • Sessions are easy to set up and schedule.
  • Communication with your coach is simple and straightforward.
  • The sessions themselves (in my experience) are incredibly valuable and definitely worth the price.

What I Don’t Like

  • I find myself wishing that sessions weren’t quite as expensive. However, I do understand that this is more of a ‘luxury’ service, and their price points aren’t unreasonable for what they’re offering.

Who Is Relationship Hero for?

Relationship Hero is a great service for anyone who needs a second opinion, guidance, or advice about how to navigate something that’s throwing them for a loop in their relationship life.

This will usually mean their marriage/romantic relationship, but it could also cover friendships, relationships with family, co-working relationships, etc.

The Verdict

Relationship Hero fills a much-needed blind spot for people who want to improve the quality of their relationships.

Their services are priced a bit higher than some of the alternatives that you’ll find on the marketplace—but my experience and belief (after trying it out myself) is that this higher price point also comes with a better, more focused, more specific solution that’ll empower you to find better answers to relationship problems in a fraction of the time.

Thus, I feel that the pricing is justified when you weigh it against the quality received.

If you’re facing some kind of issue in your own relationship life that’s confusing you or throwing you for a loop, then I’d recommend trying out an introductory session to see if it helps.

Personally, I found the service extremely helpful and insightful. My coach really helped me to see some deeper truths about myself that’ll make a lasting positive impact on my life (and in my relationships moving forward), and you can’t really put a price tag on that kind of knowledge.

Thus, I’ll most likely be utilizing their services in the future.

FAQs

Is Relationship Hero trustworthy?

Relationship Hero has helped over 100,000 clients and has garnered over 71,000 5-star reviews to date.

I’ve also used them personally and can confirm—they most definitely seem to be trustworthy.

How do I cancel my Relationship Hero?

Different coaches have different cancellation policies. For example—my Relationship Hero coach charged a 5% fee if you canceled in 24 hours or more if you reschedule the same week. But they charge you a 50% fee if you cancel without rescheduling within a week.

You also get charged a 50% fee if you cancel on short notice or don’t show up for your scheduled session.

Does relationship coaching work?

I believe that every person should go through some kind of relationship coaching on a yearly basis, just to keep those ‘tribe-building’ wheels greased and to make sure that they’re not going off the deep end in their own relationships without realizing that they’re even doing it.
